Method of Hip Baths - Hot, Cold, Neutral and Alternate Hip Bath

Hip baths are one of the widely used hydrotherapy treatment. In hip baths, the patient has to dip the hip and abdominal region below the navel in water. The patient is made to sit in tube, so as to make his body up to navel from below to immersed in water. Hip bath is given in hot, cold, neutral and other temperature.

Hot Hip Bath

Hot hip bath is taken for about ten minutes with water at 40 C to 45 C. The patient is made to sit in a tub at 40 C water and the temperature is increased up to 45 C. The cold pack must be applied on the head avoiding friction to abdomen. Before hot hip baths, he must drink a glass of cold water. After hot hip bath a cold shower bath is advised immediately. One must avoid exposing to cold to avoid chill. This water treatment is useful in relieving painful menstruation. It reduces enlarged prostate. It is also useful in painful contraction of the bladder, sciatica, piles and ovaries.

Cold Hip Bath

For cold hip bath, maintain the water temperature at 10 to 18 C for a period of 10-15 minutes, some times up to half an hour. If the patient feels cold then immediately hot foot immersion bath is advised along with cold hip bath. Then the patient’s abdomen below the navel must be rubbed briskly with a course wet cloth. After the bath the legs, feet and upper part of the body must be dried. Then he should undertake light exercise to warm up the body.

Cold hip bath is a routine treatment for constipation, obesity. Indigestion and regulates the eliminative organs to work properly. This water treatment also helps in menstrual problems, hemorrhoids, liver congestion, prostatic congestion, and uterine disorders, sterility, displacement of uterus and ovaries. It is contraindicated in diseases of pelvic organs, ovaries and inflammation of the bladder, virginal and rectum.

Neutral Hip Bath

Neutral hip baths is a type of hip bath with water of 32º C 36º for 15 minutes to one hour. It relieves acute and sub-acute inflammations of ovary and fallopian tubes and bladder and painful spasm of vagina, itching of anus and vulva and it acts as a sedative treatment for erotmanis in both sexes.

Alternate Hip Bath

The patient is made to sit alternately in hot hip with water at 40 degree C and cold tub of 10-15º C for about 6 to 8 minutes respectively. The duration of hip bath is 10-25 minutes. During the treatment the head and neck are applied with cold compress. Applying cold water to the hips is the end of the treatment.

Method of Immersion Baths - Cold, Hot and Neutral Immersion Bath

Immersion bath makes the body healthy and is done in bath tub which is connected with hot and cold water connections. This bath is taken hot, cold, neutral and graduated at different temperature. It is also called full bath. Below you will learn the methods of cold, hot and neutral immersion bath.

Cold Immersion Bath

Cold immersion bath is given about 20 minutes at a temperature of 10º C to 23.8º C. Before this bath, patient’s body is applied including the head. Cold pack with moist cloth or towel is applied. At the time of bath his body is rubbed very well. After this bath he must be dried soon and wrapped in the woolen blanket. This is not to be given to very young and old persons. It is not to be done in enteritis, gastritis, inflammation of uterus and also ovaries.

Hot Immersion Bath

Hot immersion bath is given at a temperature of 37º C and gradually raised to 40º C by adding hot water. Before taking this bath the patient must drink cold water and make his body cold especially head, neck and shoulders with cold water. A cold compress is done during the entire treatment.

Hot immersion bath is useful in dropsy-accumulation of fluids in the body. It relieves in children, bronchitis and bronchopneumonia and also congestion of lungs. The bath is stopped when the skin becomes red. In chronic bronchitis hot bath is taken for about 5-10 minutes along with friction and rubbing after bath. If necessary, oil application is made to the skin of the patient. It is beneficial in chronic Rheumatism, gall bladder stones and urinary stones. It is not given in diseases of the brain and spinal cord, cardiac hypertrophy and weakness of heart.

Neutral Immersion Bath

Neutral immersion bath is given at a temperature of 26º C to 28º C, the normal body temperature for about one hour. It activates the skin and kidney diseases as it works as a sedative. It is useful in diseases of brain, spinal cord, meningitis, arthritis and rheumatism.

This is useful in dropsy of cardiac, renal and general, alcoholism, chronic multiple neuritis, chronic, diarrhea, peritonitis and chronic diseases of abdomen. It is not to be done in skin diseases as eczema and heart diseases.

There are several curative hydrotherapeutic treatments and the two common among them are steam bath and full wet sheet pack. In this article you will learn the methods and benefits of steam bath and full wet sheet pack. Both the hydrotherapeutic treatments have several health benefits and act as a natural healing process for many diseases.

Stream Bath

Stream baths can be done in several ways. It can be done by either making the patient to lie down on a wooden plank which is fitted with pores to pass stream to the body. He is made to drink the cold water and protect his head with cold cloth. His head is usually outside the cabin. This treatment is done till he gets perspiration on his body. He is advised cold shower bath after the stream bath.

Full Wet Sheet Pack

In full wet sheet pack, the patient’s body is wrapped with a cold sheet and then wrapped in a dry blanket in order to regulate heat. The sheet must be properly fixed to the body. The head is covered with a wet cloth. The feet are kept warm during the treatment with hot water bottles, if the feet are cold. He is given cold or hot water to drink during the treatment. This is done till he gets perspiration. This treatment must be done three hours before meals especially for entire body.

Full wet sheet pack is useful in fever-typhoid and continued fevers; and it relieves sleeplessness, chronic cold and bronchitis and it also relieves obesity and rheumatism.

Cold Compress and Heating Compress - Methods and Benefits

Cold Compress

In cold compress, a piece of cloth is dipped in either cold or ice water and applied on the head, neck, chest, back and abdomen. This water treatment is useful in controlling the inflammation of abdominal organs as liver, spleen, kidney, stomach, intestines and brain and pelvic organs as bladder, uterus. It is also applied externally to the eyes to reduce the inflammation.

Heating Compress

It is a cold compress, which brings warmth to the body. It is nothing but three or four folds of cloth wrung out in cold water, which is covered completely either with blanket or dry flannel to prevent air and increase body heat. It is applied for few hours to several hours. It depends on the nature of thickness of the covering and the temperature of water. After removing the compress, the area must be rubbed with a wet cloth and then dried with a dry towel.

Heating compress must be applied to the abdomen, joints, chest, and abdomen. An abdominal compress relieves gastritis, hyperacidity, jaundice, indigestion, constipation, diarrhea, dysentery. A throat compress will heal the sore throat. The chest compress will relieves cold, bronchitis, pleurisy, pneumonia, fever and cough. The compress of joints will relieve rheumatic fever, rheumatism, inflamed joints and sprains.

It is beneficial in leprosy, psoriasis and leucoderma. It is also useful in relieving rheumatic pain and pain in the joints. The probable duration of treatment runs from half an hour to one hour. It is also used as beauty treatment. It absorbs the toxins from the body. It reduces the swelling of any part of the body.

Epsom Salt Bath

In Epsom salt bath, the bath tub contains about 135-140 liters of hot water at 40º C. 1.5 Kg of Epsom salt are added to it and make it dissolved. Before the patient lies down in the tub his head should be covered with a cold towel and he drinks a glass of cold water. His body is completely immersed in the tub. This is done before going to bed at night.

Epsom salt bath is useful in rheumatism, lumbago, diabetes, cold and catarrh, kidney, diseases, sciatica, gout and skin diseases.

Graduated Bath

In graduated bath, the patient is subjected to bath at 31º C and the water temperature gradually lowered at 1º C per minute till it reaches 25º C, till he gets shivering. This is done every three hour.

Graduated bath reduces the temperature immediately except in malaria and it is tonic to the body by increasing the resistance of the body.

The following precautions must be taken during the treatment:

1. These water treatments must be done three hours before meals especially for entire body.
2. Use clean and pure water only.
3. Used water must be discarded and fresh water is used.
4. For ladies these treatments are better to be avoided during menses.
5. The temperature must be regulated for suitably good results.
6. The thermometer must be used to record heat of water during the treatment.
